Muscat OttonelThe delicate, aromatic charmer that brings floral elegance to your glass

Muscat Ottonel is the refined younger sibling in the vast Muscat family, created in the Loire Valley of France in 1852 by Jean Moreau. Unlike its more robust cousins, this grape was bred by crossing Chasselas with Muscat d'Eisenstadt, resulting in a variety that ripens earlier and thrives in cooler climates.

While it never gained much traction in its French homeland, Muscat Ottonel found its true calling in Central and Eastern Europe, particularly in Alsace, Austria, Romania, and Hungary. It's become a star in producing aromatic dry wines and luscious sweet wines, especially in Romania's Cotnari region and Austria's Burgenland.

What makes this grape special is its delicate, perfumed character that's more subtle than other Muscats, offering elegance over power. It's the grape that proves you don't need to shout to be heard.

Wie erkennt man diese Rebsorte?

Muscat Ottonel greets your nose with an intoxicating bouquet of white flowers, particularly orange blossom and jasmine, followed by fresh lychee, elderflower, and ripe white peaches. There's often a gentle hint of rose petals and citrus zest that adds complexity without overwhelming the senses.

On the palate, it's typically light to medium-bodied with refreshing acidity and flavors echoing the aromatic profile: white grape, apricot, and a characteristic grapey sweetness (even in dry versions). The finish is clean and floral, sometimes with a subtle spicy note.

This versatile grape pairs beautifully with Asian cuisine, especially Thai and Vietnamese dishes, fresh cheeses, fruit tarts, and spicy foods that benefit from its aromatic lift. Sweet versions are divine with foie gras or blue cheese.
